Totomi: A bonanza of strategic stacking fun
Rovio Mobile (Totomi developer) had all their creative minds flowing when they came up with this app. Totomi has an introduction story in which a small creature is called upon by the gods to build a totem pole all the way up to the sky and help the gods.
The god says the animals will help. So, you must stack a wide variety of animals to form a totem. You can feed and breed the animals to make your totem go even higher. The animals can eat either many types of food or other animals. The game has a very strategic concept to it that keeps the game entertaining.
Totomi has three different combos plus a couple strategic moves and tons of animals and food. Certain animals and food are available in each level of play. This adds for an increasing difficulty level as you go. They’re two main modes of play, classic and arcade. With that classic has three submodes of play and arcade one. Totem Marathon is in my opinion the best mode of play but all are actually quite good (and on that note all are very similar). There’s a total of 35 levels, all re-playable and ranging in difficulty. Levels go by quickly so this game loses some replay value. Also, besides new animals and food, the levels don’t unlock any new concepts (i.e. power-ups, new game rule, etc…
so this further drops replay value. Not to say that if you are into this game, I would look at it as quite addicting.
The user interface is simple and very easy to navigate. The whole theme of the app is very friendly on the eyes, cute, and would appeal to younger players. Graphics are decent but the game objects look like sprites from an old 2D game, these could be smoothed out a bit. In presentation, sound is most notable. The background music is perfect for the app and the sound effects are extraordinary. High scores are displayed in a slightly modified “cover flow” look. You’re able to flick through the categories of high scores.
The tutorials and menus with help information are fantastic, allows any user to understand the game (and yes, this game can get complex). Unfortuantely, Totomi lacks much settings, data erasing and basic sound options are about it. All in all though, Rovio mobile did an excellent job on this game.
This game has sort of a younger audience feel to it, although with the strategy involved older audiences will be appealed too. If you have a child or are one, this game is for you, very cute and very appealing. If you’re a fan of puzzle games or just like adorable animals, this game is just right for you. $4.99 is reasonably priced but I would personally like to see it at $3.99
