Flick Fishing: Digital Fishing Phenomenon.

Wow.  Honestly, this is an extraordinary app.  A great fishing simulation and so addictive.  Flick Fishing is well, a fishing simulation game, complete with quests, tournaments, wi-fi multiplayer, and free fishing.  The ultimate goal of the game is to catch different species of fish in the greatest weight possible.  It takes skill to master this game (and probably some background fishing knowledge).  Whether or not you like fishing you will surely like this app.

You start off in a small pond, to cast your line you literally swing your iphone.  The smoother your swing the better, this takes practice, and keeps you involved in the game.  Once you’ve practiced up a bit, you’ll be ready for the more difficult (and rewarding) fishing spots.  They’re six fishing spots to choose from, and a lodge where you will receive missions and fishing tips from an old sailor looking to fill his aquarium with a bountiful of fish.  You can already see there’s a lot to keep you involved in this game.  there’s even an ‘Extreme Fishing’ mode.

The whole fishing experience is fantastic, you can choose between many baits and lures, all attracting a different kind of fish.  So many factors are involved for the catch, how fast you reel in your line, bobbing the line with the accelerometer (tilt) controls, and how far you were able to cast.  The fish will even fight back from being caught, the game will even show your line tension.  Mishaps occur, and your line can snap or the fish can escape.  When you do catch that marvelous fish, the ‘Brag’ button is waiting for you, email your fish to your friends!

Graphics are superb, each fishing spot is detailed and looks very realistic.  Sound effects are perfect, from seagulls in the air to waves and splashes on your boat.  Your boat moves with the waves and rocks back and forth, everything is in a perfect simulation of real life fishing.

You can tell the developers took the time on this layout.  The fishing spots are plotted out on a delightful map and each will give a description, difficulty rating, and the popular catch.  In your high scores area you can swipe through your tournament scores, catches, and trophies.  You can even rotate the iphone to landscape mode and the catches area will turn into a virtual aquarium.

We’re all wrapped up for this app!  I highly recommend it, you will have fun on so many levels with this app.  If you happen to be a vegan or something and find this app outrageous, remember, it’s a simulation, (and fun as hell).

Air Hockey by Acceleroto: The air hockey app we’ve been waiting for

If you don’t like air hockey, don’t expect this app to get you into that groove.  Although if you do, this has to be one of the best air hockey games for the iPhone and iPod Touch!  There is much room for improvement though $0.99 cents is an amazing price for an app of this quality.  Air Hockey by Acceleroto provides you with a genuine fantastic air hockey experience.  Ability to play by yourself against a computer of five difficulty levels or with a friend (but on the same phone).  A cool feature is being able to play with two pucks, this provides a unique challenge.

The game has excellent physics with absolutely no kinks.  The touch controls are smooth, nothing lags and the AI (artificial intelligence) reacts promptly.  The difficulty levels simply increase the speed of your opponent’s puck which yes provides a challenge but it would be nice to see increased intelligence.  Although play INSANE! mode and you might call me crazy to want to actually raise intelligence.  There are however a few glitches/game errors to fix as listed below in ‘Further Improvements’.  Overall the game feels good.

User interface is simple.  Really simple.  Slide up menus at the start get you right into the game; as for any other menu/settings they can be found by double tapping the center logo in game.  You’re able to set the board to change to random colours each time you play a new game.  If you make a mistake in setting up your game, you can double tap the logo and tap reset game.  This will start a new game so you don’t have to finish your current one to go to the original slide up menus.  Goal alerts are flashed when you score that adds that tiny bit of excitement to scoring.  As for sound, it’s clear as a bell and adds the perfect touch of realism to the app.  iPod music is playable in the app and volume control can be accessed by double tapping the logo.

Final Ratings:

Gameplay: 8/10

Enjoyment: 8/10

Graphics: 9/10

Sound: 9/10

Technology: 6/10

Replay Value: 7.5/10

Overall Rating: 8/10

Further Improvements: (note to the developer!)

  • Fix Glitch: Exiting and resuming game leaves you with the puck(s) automatically
  • Fix Glitch: Pucks stay frozen after resuming a paused game (though the opponent will hit the pucks still)
  • More settings (number of pucks, colours, bounce, friction)
  • Multiplayer over wi-fi
  • Timed game with high scores
  • Win/Lose statistics

Frenzic: Mountains of fast paced logical fun

Frenzic is a unique puzzle game where thinking fast is very important. This refreshing game is perfect for time killing and completely worth the $4.99. The main goal is to score points by placing triangles in six circles. You must think on your feet to decide which circle is best. The more similar coloured triangles in a whole circle the more points you’ll recieve. It almost sounds boring and corny but the execution of the app and the whole fast paced concept will keep you entailed.

They’re a few powerups in the game that you must use if you want to succeed. The global (requires registration) and local high scores keep you motivated with a few categories of scores ( devotion, total points, etc…Wink.  You’re also able to see the high scores of any iPod touch or iPhone playing frenzic on the same network. Perfect for playing tournaments with peers.

Despite it’s simple concept Frenzic is surprisingy addictive but the enjoyment level drops gradually.  Nonetheless the thrill of beating your high score is still there (as for any game but puzzle games like this especially).  If you are into puzzle games I recommend Frenzic. Good brain exercising.

The graphics are well done, you know the developer put time into this game. Sound effects are delightful and you’re able to play your own iPod music as well.  High scores table is well done, that’s about the only thing for user interface as when you start the app it gets straight into the game. Although there is a center start button and a small menu on the bottom. Navigating through frenzic is an enjoyable experience.

Further Improvements: (note to the developer!)

  • More Powerups
  • Difficulty levels (i.e. Harder levels would have more colours, even faster gameplay, swap circles, rotate circles)
  • Patterned triangles, choice of background image or colour

Enjoyment: 7.5/10
Graphics: 8/10

Centipede: One of the best arcade games for the iPhone

As I played this game on the PC many years ago I was hoping this port of Centipede to the iPhone would be just as good.  It turned out to be better with three addicting game modes.

In centipede you must destroy the centipede before it reaches your entity (which you shoot from).  In Ultra mode there are many powerups which keeps the game interesting.  Well, not only the powerups but with three modes of play this game is always interesting and very addicting.  This only scores a few points as a quick pick up and play game as games are generally very long (a good 20 minutes).

The graphics are just ok, most from the old game.  Sound effects are spectacular and enhance the arcade experience.  You may also choose to listen to your own iPod music.  Our applause to the developers on this game.

Further Improvements (note to the developer!):

  • Ability to set how many lives or game length
  • More of a modern user interface
  • Live links under the ‘More Games’ section

Enjoyment: 9/10

Antimatter: A refreshing arcade game perfect for that extra ten minutes you always have

Pangea Software (makers of Enigmo) have brought us another fantastically developed game. Like Enigmo this game almost seems like a giant particle demo. Despite that observation this is a refreshing arcade game that unfortunately starts to get boring fast.

The object of the game is to turn all blue coloured floating lines to green. Being the ‘antimatter’ you must slide your finger around the screen directing the ‘antimatter’ into the lines. They’re a few power ups to help you along the way.

The graphics are rendered nicely and bring out the arcade style of the game. Controls are smooth but it helps to turn up the sensitivity in the settings. The user interface is simple and effective.

Further Improvements (note to the developer!):

  • More then one way of movement
  • More power-ups (keep the game exciting)
  • More bonus round types
  • Random levels, game gets boring if you can’t beat a certain level

Scoops: $1.99 of iced cream tilting fun

Scoops achieves what almost every game should have, simple but immensely fun gameplay.  Not is it just good fun, this game will have you flicking through your home screen’s right back to it.  In Scoops you tilt your iPhone to move around an ice cream stack and cone.  You must collect the ice cream scoops and avoid the vegetables.

Unfortunately, there is no use of the touch screen to tilt the cone.  To keep it entertaining, and challenging, the speed of the dropping ice cream and vegetables increases the more you last without stacking a vegetable.  Not just speed increases though, but the points you pick up.  You can even stack up scoops of the same colour for extra points.

The interface is fantastic, adding high scores and selecting from the menu is a breeze.  There is a local and global high scores table.

Here at iPhone App Reviewer we always end our reviews with further improvements that could be made to the app, so here goes nothing.

Further Improvements (note to the developer!):

  • All time global high scores, not just daily
  • Bonus scoops besides the ‘magic’ scoop that restores a life
  • Touch screen control!
  • Some cartoon background graphics are a little edgy
